RE: Pirate Land

We have been going there for 18 years or so. Many people complain about the site size, but our impression has always been that the sites seem pretty big. In the beach area you have a shelter at each site except the pull-throughs. That takes up some space, but we love them. I have stayed in parks up north in non-resort areas which have much smaller sites. As usual, if you have decent neighbors, the site size is not so important. I have seen everything from tents to 40 ft. MH's so I believe they will find you a space. The facilities are very nice--love the lazy river. As for pics, the ones on their site aren't bad at all. Have fun, but we will miss you--we are going in June and September this year.

RE: Columbia area

We usually go down I-77 to I-20. We used to stay quite a distance up north in VA, but because of our schedule this time we need to go farther south the first day. We would like to be south of Charlotte and could go as far as Camden I suppose.

Columbia area

Looking for a one night stopover on the way to Myrtle Beach. Would like to be in the Columbia area preferrably north or east. Anyone have a good suggestion? We usually stay farther north so we aren't really familiar with this area too much. Camping guides don't show too much.

RE: Campground near Marion Ohio?

There is a campground west of Marion off of 309. It is probably 3-4 miles from Marion. Has W&E at most of the sites, full hookups available, even a few pull-throughs. Kind of old fashioned, but the folks that run it make a real effort. Has mini-golf, B-ball, fishing-swimming lake, game room, weekend activities---Hickory Grove Lake. We go there fairly often and like it a lot. Up towards Upper Sandusky there is another called Foxfire, but it is a bit far to drive back to Marion. Hope this helps!

RE: Overnight on I75

I would second the Tav-l-Park idea. We've stayed there 2 times. Very nice! Good for exploring the area too, even thought that may not be your concern at this time.

RE: Cracked Bolt on Equalizer

Yes, I've had to tighten the bolts a couple times--nothing much, but a bit. This really surprised me though. It looked really nasty.

Cracked Bolt on Equalizer

Returned from a trip to Texas and noticed that the arms on my Equalizer didn't take any effort to set as we started home. Just figure that we had somehow rearranged the load so that it had affected the hitch somehow. It warmed up enough yesterday to go out and take a look. I had intended to put another spacer in to give a bit more pressure to boost the sway control and put a bit more weight forward. When I loosened the bolts on the hitch bar to put another washer in, the bottom bolt didn't want to come out. I finally got it, and to my surprise, it was bent rather severely to the point of cracking the bolt on one side. I don't remember ever hitting anything that would cause a severe jolt against the hitch other than the normal highway bumps and potholes. Went to the local ACE and got a replacement stronger bolt, but I am concerned about what may have caused the problem. If it hadn't bent enough to change the adjustment, I probably wouldn't have noticed it and eventually the top bolt may have been affected causing a catastrophe. Anyone else have a similar thing happen, or could someone venture a theory about what went wrong. Up until this trip, the hitch seemed to work very well on two different trailers for about 5-6 years.

RE: Myrtle Beach campgrounds

We've done Pirateland for 17 years. Have looked at the others, but haven't seen a reason to change. Nice facilities and lots for kids to do. As mentioned, each CG has its advantages. One thing we like about Pirateland is the little shelters at each site in the beach area. Really helps when it is hot. Be aware that reservations can be tough around holidays. Have fun.

RE: Colonial Williamsburg

One more vote for American Heritage. A really nicee place close to about everything.

RE: Ohio Amish Campgrounds

I vote for Evergreen. Farther west is Whispering Hills with a lot of things to do there--fishing, hiking, frisbee golf, swimming, hayrides. Both are a bit pricey, but not out of line. There is a little "mom and pop" restaurant that has some pretty good food within walking distance of Evergreen. WH has a little restaurant right at the campground and an Amish restaurant just up the road at Shreve. PM me if you would like more info. We go over that way once or twice every year.

RE: Looking for a Zoo

We have been to about 20 zoos. Reasonably close to you, I would suggest Knoxville and Cincy. A bit farther away Columbus, Ohio and Columbia, SC. We have not been to the NC zoo yet. Have heard good things though. St. Louis is nice, too.

RE: Campgrounds Around San Antonio

Just returned from Admiralty Park near Sea World also near Blazing Star Resort. Very friendly, helpful folks. Nice park in a good location. We took Commerce Street downtown a couple times to the market area and Riverwalk. About a half hour or so.Be aware that Texas road signs take a bit of getting used to and sometimes when you desperately need one, it is non-existent. Have fun, we did!!

RE: Bethpage resort virginia

Ditto what was said in second post. Very nice resort. A pretty good restaurant just down the road, but a good drive to just about anything to do. Some antique shops local, a sightseeing cruise, and some fishing/crabbing, but not much else without a 30 minute drive.

RE: Myrtle beach?

Be aware of the weather. April can be really nice there, but the way weather has been the last couple years, who knows--still better than Boston or Ohio. I would agree with about everything here. You will find plenty to do in the area. Brookgreen might not be too exciting for the kids, but it is impressive. Charleston is great--Patriot's Point should be a hit, the market is pretty neat, and carriage rides are very informative and fun. There is a cool little zoo just outside Myrtle Beach called Waccatee(sp.). It is entirely outside in a woods and is well worth the very low price to get in. Lots of the touristy type stuff--Margaritaville, Ripley's Aquarium, outlet malls, cute shops at Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing, Bass Pro Shop. I disagree about the marginal restaurants. Some indeed are just food, but there are some very good places too. Some are off the beaten path and feature low country and old southern style cooking. PM if you need some suggestions or want more info. We have been going there for about 18 years with and without kids.

RE: San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Galveston

Thanks so much folks. Once again we may revise the itinerary and just do CC and San Antonio area unless someone talks us out of it. So much info to digest. Thanks again.

San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Galveston

After a lot more reading, and suggestions from members on this site, we have narrowed our rather abbreviated tour of Texas (about 3 weeks) to these three areas. We are retired and have never been to Texas before. We are looking for any and all info about these three areas especially CC and Galveston as we have quite a bit of info about San Antonio. Obviously we are looking for recommendations about campgrounds in all three areas--but would like some "off the beaten path" type advice as well as some retaurant suggestions (seafood, BBQ, Italian, American, breakfast). We are planning to head that way in the next 2-3 weeks. We really appreciate the info.

RE: Findlay, OH and Allegan, MI

Pleasntview isn't that bad. Be aware they do not have a pool, but a fairly clean swimming only pond. Fire Lake is closer to Mich. of course and is close to the interstate, but is fairly "bare bones." From Fire Lake, you are probably only about 1/2 hr. from the state line. Shady Lake is right near the freeway at Findlay. They don't advertise because they are mostly seasonal. I'm not sure how many transient sites they have. Hope that helps a bit.

RE: Eastern Texas

Thanks from everyone so far. Guess I wasn't too specific as to locale. When I wrote about eastern Texas, I just meant coming from Ohio, we didn't believe we could have enough time to do the far western part of the state. We would like to see some sights of course, but usually find that we spend a half day sightseeing/shopping, etc. and half the day at the campground. We bike and hike some. We know we can't do everything, so we're jujst looking for suggestions like the ones we have in this topic. So many people here are so helpful. We have received countless tips to help us in our travels.

Eastern Texas

We are planning to make a quick tour of eastern Texas probably in February. We are especially interested in campgrounds in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Houston/Galveston, and perhaps San Antonio for 5-7 days each. We would like full hookups, but other amenities are optional. Any suggestions? Also Texas is so huge and the info is rather overwhelming---are there any "Don't miss!" attractions that we may not be aware of? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
